31 Miles for Nature

I’m moving 31 Miles for Nature to raise £150 for Greenpeace - can you sponsor me?

Our favourite places in nature are under threat from climate change, habitat loss and pollution. We need to act now to save them. That's why I've decided to move 31 Miles for Nature this October and raise £150 for Greenpeace.

With a fifty year history of defending nature, Greenpeace's mission is to create a greener, healthier, and more peaceful planet. Any donation you make could help power their campaigns to keep our oceans healthy, our forests standing, and fossil fuels in the ground.

Greenpeace never accepts money from companies or governments, so they depend on supporters, like us, to fund all of their campaigns.

Please sponsor me today and help me reach my £150 goal. Thank you!

My Updates

THANK YOU

Friday 31st Oct
So my final plea did it - I received a few more donations, passed my target and have raised £201. I'm blown away by people's generosity.

Final plea

Friday 31st Oct
So I've passed my new distance target of 50 miles, and completed 67 - more than double my original target. BUT I'm still £28 short of my fund-raising target and today is the last day of the month so I'm going to pluck up the courage to send a final request to the folk who haven't responded.

We did it!

Wednesday 29th Oct
On Saturday 25th, 4 of us members of the Portsmouth Greenpeace group met at Rowlands Castle for a 5.42 mile walk through Stansted Forest to the Garden Centre where we enjoyed leisurely refreshments before walking back, admiring Highland cattle en route. We were blessed with cold but (mostly) dry weather. It took 3 hours 31 minutes because of the stop for refreshments.
Including walking to and from the station I actually covered 8.56 miles that day. Last Wednesday I had exceeded my 31 mile target for the month, so increased it to 50 miles. I've now done 46, so 4 more to go (in two days).
On Sunday I did 2 miles, Monday 2.8 and yesterday 3. Today I've managed 4.1 and that doesn't include half an hour of badminton because I wore trousers without a pocket, so couldn't have my step-tracker on me.

Improving

Friday 24th Oct
Covered 4.9 miles to day (most of which was dancing as I helped steward Stand Up To Racism's counter-protest to Portsmouth Patriots who, for weeks, have been targeting the Southsea hotel housing asylum seekers) 1.08 of which was my walk to the optician's, which I completed in 21 minutes 59 seconds - much to my amazement as a fierce wind was against me the whole way! Feeling much better about joining the group walk tomorrow.

Oh dear!

Thursday 23rd Oct
So I've done less than a mile today as I've been working from home and didn't leave the house. It's even worse than what I achieved on Sunday. Hopefully I'll make up for it with the  group walk on Saturday.

Slacking?

Wednesday 22nd Oct
I haven't posted anything for a couple of days but I've just updated my distances. 2.4 miles on Monday (I got rather wet) and 2.7 yesterday Today's 2.5 included more hardly-any-distance-covering badminton. It's poured this evening but the forecast looks ok for our group walk on Saturday. I'm a little concerned I  may not be able to keep up with the others. I've exceeded my 31 mile target, with only 9ndays left to go (and I did start late) but am unsure about increasing it. I'm trying to pluck up courage to share my  request yet again in groups where no-one has responded.

Pathetic BUT...

Sunday 19th Oct
So I only managed .93 of a mile today BUT this site says I've passed my target of 31 miles. I'm going to keep going because I think it rounds up my distances. I had planned to walk to my own church this morning but, despite getting up early, I  was running late. I'd had a lousy night as I was inexplicably cold and I didn't feel right.  Not sure if it's a reaction to the flu jab I had Wednesday or the daily injections I started on Monday for my osteoporosis.

Not bad

Saturday 18th Oct
I managed 4 miles today which included 1.74  walking to Fratton railway station and then from Basingstoke station to my destination (the United Reformed Church) and back. It took 36 minutes 59 seconds - but that involved the stairs of Fratton footbridge and the steep climb up to the old part of Basingstoke and I'm finding my COPD makes me quite breathless.

Two thirds of my mileage completed!

Friday 17th Oct
It's been a better day distance-wise with 4.6 miles  covered AND that includes a total of 2.05 miles completed in 41minutes and 28 seconds which represents an improvement in my walking speed.

Oops!

Thursday 16th Oct
Only 1.6 miles managed today - but it includes .5 of a mile walking to and from the Community Centre, which I managed in less than 10.5 minutes - so a slight increase in speed, I believe.

Better

Wednesday 15th Oct
The 3.3 miles I covered today included half an hour playing badminton (well trying to hit a shuttlecock) during which time I hardly covered a fifth of a mile! I also walked to and from the pharmacy (for my flu jab) and did a bit of shopping - 1.23 miles taking 32.22minutes.

Steady

Tuesday 14th Oct
A steady 2.3 miles today. I'd hoped to walk more - going to a friend's  house but time got the better of me and I resorted to a taxi.

Over halfway there

Monday 13th Oct
Thanks to the generosity of friends, I have now received more than half my  target in donations. I'm not confident about reaching my target as I hate asking folk for money. I haven't reached the halfway mark of my walking target - but I was late starting. Today I've only managed 2.23 miles - walking to the pharmacy and back but it was interrupted by attending my Hoarding Support group and shopping and I forgot to pause and resume my tracker, so I can't compare the speed achieved.

Slipping

Sunday 12th Oct
So I only managed 2.8 miles today but that included 1.86 walking to and from church which took 38 minutes. I’m hoping the more I do, the fitter I’ll get and the faster I’ll become  but my COPD slows me down.

Today’s destination

Saturday 11th Oct

Onwards & Upwards

Saturday 11th Oct
5.5 miles today! This included 1.31 to Fratton station and back and 3.14 from Southampton station to Avenue St Andrew’s church and back. It’s so long since I’ve been, I walked further than necessary. About 25 years ago I walked from Winchester cathedral to Southampton - I couldn't do that now.

My 2nd day

Friday 10th Oct
So I completed 3.8 miles today which included walking to and from my optician’s and coming back from Canoe Lake (I had a taxi there because I was running (WALKING) late.  Those walks came to 2.46 miles and took me 52:62 minutes.

The beginning

Thursday 9th Oct
I’ve only started today as I’ve been busy and unwell, so I’ve some catching up to do! I’ve covered 1.41 miles, mostly around the house but it includes .29 of a mile, walking home from the CoOp which took 6:28 minutes.
